The Christ Child Society's Clothing Center in South Bend is unique in the Michiana area. Every year over 4,000 needy children receive new wardrobes, regardless of race, gender, or creed. This service is offered for children ranging in ages from birth to twelve years.
Clothing is distributed to disadvantaged children from early fall until late winter. The Clothing Center, located at 308 South Scott Street, is open Wednesday mornings from 8:30 until noon and a limited number of Sunday afternoons. Dedicated volunteers staff the Center. There are no paid employees and no government funds are used to purchase the new clothing.
Clients are assisted on a first come first serve basis, and must present a signed referral letter from one of over eighty social service agencies in St. Joseph County. They must also present personal identification and birth certificates plus social security cards for their children.
After an interview, parents receive a bag of new clothing for each child that includes: five pairs of socks, five pairs of underwear, two shirts, a pair of pants, new shoes, warm winter coat, a knitted hat, and a pairof mittens. Children who wear sizes four or smaller also receive pajamas and a stuffed bear. All children receive a toothbrush.
An outfit of gently used clothing for play, or perhaps something to wear to church is also offered. Families qualify for this service once each year.
