The South Bend Chapter of The Christ Child Society and her sister chapters throughout the United States hold in common the wonderful project of assembling and distributing layettes for newborns. In South Bend, over 400 layettes are given out annually at our Clothing Center and at each hospital.
Parents are surprised and pleased to receive this gift, including a crib blanket, two receiving blankets, three nightgowns, three sleep and play pajamas, one Good Night Moon book, a stuffed bear, a card with a Miraculous Medal, and an information packet with helpful hints for new mothers. A card inside tells the recipient that this is a gift from The Christ Child Society.
Families qualify for this assistance in the same way they might qualify for receiving clothing for their older children. Referrals are handled by the Social Services Department at each hospital.
Before long, calls were received asking for clothing for older children. The membership decided to add this project to their original proposal.
In cooperation with Women’s Care Centers we will be distributing what we call a “Layette of Hope.” It is a small plastic bag containing a “onesie” and a pair of infant socks. It will be given to each woman who tests positive for pregnancy. The card inside reads: “Please accept this gift with love from The Christ Child Society. We pray that you will have a healthy baby and a safe delivery.
Hand-made gowns and hats are given out at local hospitals for still born babies or babies who die shortly after birth. The Angel Layette is provided to all grieving families regardless of their income level.
